AI is touching more and more industries, products and experiences.
📈 OPENAI IS ON A ROLL
↗ OpenAI
It’s crazy to think about the fact that ChatGPT was released just about 3 months ago. Since then there has been a tidal wave of news, experiments and stories, both good and bad.
Now OpenAI has launched APIs for two of their most advanced models Whisper, which can create accurate transcripts from audio, and ChatGPT.
This step will likely cause a Cambrian explosion of AI features in all kinds of products, as APIs make it super easy to integrate these advanced models for anyone.
Simultaneously OpenAI published a blog article about ‘Planning for AGI and beyond‘ to address some of the concerns about the accelerating (and closed) progress within their company. You be the judge of wether their arguments make sense.
Oh, and Elon Musk is rejoining the conversation as well – after starting the original open-source, non-profit version of OpenAI, which by now morphed into a pretty closed ‘capped-profit‘ company. He is rumoured to work on an alternative to ChatGPT.
🎛 SPOTIFY IS LAUNCHING AN AI DJ
↗ Spotify
Speaking of implementing AI features into existing products: AI DJ, a new feature that lets users create personalised music experiences narrated by a personal AI DJ, is also (partly) powered by OpenAI.
According to Spotify, the feature combines OpenAI technology with their existing recommendation systems and a tool called Sonantic – which is able to generate pretty realistic artificial voices, and is build by a company that Spotify acquired last year.
It’s interesting how the the usage of OpenAI technology is framed: “With this generative AI tooling, our editors are able to scale their innate knowledge in ways never before possible.“ I think approaches like this will be the ones really having an longterm impact: figuring out ways to combine AI with human skills to build custom tools and experiences. In contrast, just using the raw models like ChatGPT ‘one size fits all‘-style might sound promising but will likely not have any real value. At least for now.
If anyone is interested in building tools like this, please reach out! We’ve been doing a lot of exploring.
🍿 RUNWAY’S AI FILM FESTIVAL
↗ Runway
What might the next generation of Hollywood look like? Looking at the rapid progress in generative AI it will likely be very different from todays.
Runway, one of the main players in the generative video space has hosted their first AI Film Festival in New York, celebrating creators that are pushing the boundaries of storytelling using AI. The winners will also be screened in San Francisco later this month.
Here is a nice panel discussion on the topic of generative AI and film:
